Franklin County Optimist Club

New JOOI Ottawa High School Club

In June, 2013 Dale Fox and Russ Testorff, members of Ottawa Optimist Club, approached Dr. Ryan Cobbs, principal of Ottawa High School, about starting a JOOI Club at the school.  Dale and Russ met with the administrative staff at OHS later in June.  In July, Cassie Myers, site coordinator for Communities in Schools at OHS, accepted the role as sponsor of the club.  She became a member of Ottawa Optimist Club.  In August, there was a recruitment of members for the club during the enrollment process.  Nine members were secured as charter members of the club.  The paperwork for chartering was filed in November of 2013, and the charter meeting occurred during a weekly meeting in January of 2014.  Pictured above is Russ Testorff presenting the charter to the President of the club, Shania Lamm.  The club meets every Wednesday afternoon at 12:45 p.m. immediately following early dismissal of school.  The club completed 2 service projects at the school this year.  The first was a "penny war" to benefit Communities in Schools.  The second was a canned food drive that went to benefit a food pantry in Ottawa.  Several members of the club visited various meetings of Ottawa Optimist Club during the school year.  We are proud to have such a successful JOOI Club in our community.
